People sometimes ask why a company that makes school software began with the name Parentsalarm. The answer goes back to 2009, and to a simple question: why do parents always hear last?

This is the story of how that question became Schoolcanvas, told from where we stand today.

2009: a college project and a gap in schools

I started the company while I was still in college. Around me, schools were running on registers, printed circulars and phone calls. Technology was changing everything else, but most schools still worked with pen and paper. Parents found out about an absence, a fee due date or a test result days later, if at all, and a great deal of paper went home in school bags.

The idea was modest. What if a parent could get a short update on their child every day, straight from the school? Attendance, homework, notices and fee reminders, sent by SMS and voice call. Fewer missed messages for parents, less paper for schools.

We called it Parentsalarm.com, because that was exactly what it did. Infogem Web Solutions Pvt Ltd, the company behind it, was set up in Chennai, where our head office still is.

Growing with schools: from one module to many

The first schools that used Parentsalarm liked it, and then they asked for more. If you can send attendance to parents, can you help us take attendance? If you send fee reminders, can you help us collect fees? Can the bus be on the same system? The report cards?

We said yes, one request at a time. Fees came, then exams and report cards, transport, HR and payroll, admissions and the front office. Each module was shaped by the schools using it, which is why so much of Schoolcanvas is configurable today. Every school has its own way of doing things that it has followed for years, and good software should fit that, not force a change. Certificates, report cards, forms and dashboards are still set up in each school's own format.

We also learnt that the software is only half the job. A school office cannot wait two days for an answer during fee week. Service became the thing we cared about most: quick replies, training for staff, a dedicated account manager and moving a school's existing data for free.

A new name for a bigger idea

By then the name no longer fit. Parentsalarm described one module, and we had built a platform for the whole school: owners, principals, the office, teachers, parents and students, on the web and on Android and iOS apps.

We chose the name Schoolcanvas. A canvas is where everything comes together in one place, and it starts blank. That is how we see our platform: each school picks the modules and processes it wants, and builds its own picture. The rebrand was covered in national newspapers at the time, and we were glad to tell the story of a Chennai company that had grown up alongside its schools.

Schoolcanvas today

Today Schoolcanvas is a complete school ERP with 50+ modules and 500+ ready reports, in eight suites, from admissions and fees to report cards and the school bus. You can see them all on our products page.

  • 1000+ schools run their day on Schoolcanvas.
  • 1.5 million+ parents stay connected with their child's school through it.
  • 99% of schools renew with us every year.
  • 1 million+ app downloads.

Our head office is still in Chennai, with offices in Noida, Bangalore, Patna, Kolkata and Guwahati, and a service team that works with schools across the country. We hold ISO 9001:2015 and CMMI Level 4 certifications, and Schoolcanvas is DPDP-ready.

The promises behind that renewal rate are simple. We go live in 7 days when a school's data is ready. We move existing data from Excel or another ERP at no cost. During support hours we reply within 5 minutes. And the data always belongs to the school.

The next step: the academic side

For most of our history, Schoolcanvas helped run the school. The classroom was the next step. Teachers told us they spend too much time preparing material and too little time with individual students, and schools told us how hard it is to get new teachers ready quickly.

So we built Assist, a teacher-first, AI-powered LMS for Nursery to Grade 12. It comes with ready content for CBSE, ICSE and state boards, 10+ AI tools for teachers, smart-board presentations and diagnostic reports that show where each student needs help. A dedicated academic team keeps the content up to date.

The same learning platform is now coming to students at home as Schoolcanvas Learn, for Class 3 to 12, with JEE and NEET preparation. It is one platform with two names: Assist when a school uses it in the classroom, Schoolcanvas Learn when a student uses it directly.

What has not changed

Seventeen years on, the purpose is the same one we started with: bring thoughtful technology into schools, so that parents stay connected, administrators work with ease and every school runs its day with clarity and confidence.

What has defined us most is service. We treat every school as a long-term partner, with software it can rely on and support that arrives on time. It is the reason so many schools stay with us year after year.

Your school runs on us every day, and we take that seriously. The journey continues, with the same belief that the right technology can help build a brighter future for every student, parent and educator.
