School ERP and LMS together: why it matters that they talk to each other
Many schools run one system for the office and another for the classroom. Here is what changes for teachers, the exam cell and parents when the two share the same records.
On this page
Most schools did not plan to run two separate systems. The office bought an ERP for admissions, fees and report cards. A few years later, the academic team added a learning platform for smart-board lessons, worksheets and online tests. Each works well on its own. The trouble starts in the gap between them.
That gap is easy to spot. A teacher who corrects a chapter test in the learning platform copies the marks into a spreadsheet, then types them again into the ERP for the report card. New students join in July and someone has to add them to the learning platform by hand. Parents get homework in one app and worksheet results in another, and they stop opening one of them.
This post looks at what an integrated school ERP and LMS changes, using Schoolcanvas ERP and Assist, our AI-powered LMS, as the example.
What "integrated" should actually mean
"Integrated" is used loosely. A link from one system to another, or a monthly export, is not the same as two systems that share records. A useful test is to ask three questions:
- When a student joins, leaves or changes section in the office, does the classroom system know without anyone typing it again?
- When a teacher marks a test in the LMS, does the mark reach the report card without being copied?
- Do teachers, parents and students use one app, or two?
If the answer to any of these is "someone does it by hand", the systems are connected, not integrated.
One set of student and class records
Assist is fully integrated with the Schoolcanvas ERP. Students, classes, sections and subjects are the same records in both, so the office creates a student once and that student is ready in the classroom. Year-end promotion with the bulk promotion tool moves whole classes up, and the academic side follows.
For the academic head, this also means one view of each student. The ERP holds attendance, fees, health and discipline; Assist holds worksheets, chapter tests and the diagnostic report that shows where each student lacks in a subject. Looking at both together is how you tell a student who is struggling with a concept apart from one who has simply missed two weeks of school.
Marks that flow into the report card
This is the part teachers notice first. In Assist, objective answer sheets can be scanned with the integrated OMR scanner and the marks uploaded in one click. Written answers are corrected on screen with AI support, and the teacher reviews and validates every mark.
Those marks then flow into Schoolcanvas report cards. The report card module, part of the Academics & Examination suite, builds the class register, term reports and performance analysis from them, in whatever format the school uses, including the HPC for junior grades.
| Step | Two separate systems | ERP and Assist together |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter test | Marked in the LMS | Marked in Assist (OMR scan or on-screen evaluation) |
| Marks to the exam cell | Exported or copied into a spreadsheet | Flow into the report card |
| Report card | Marks typed again into the ERP | Built from the marks already there |
| Checking errors | Compare three copies of the same mark | One copy, reviewed by the teacher |
At Green Valley Public School, our fictional example, a Class 8 science teacher with four sections no longer spends the evening before the report card deadline copying marks. She checks them once, in Assist, and moves on.
One app for teachers, parents and students
With the ERP and Assist together, admin and academics sit in one web and mobile app. A teacher marks attendance, posts homework, starts the smart-board presentation and checks worksheet results without switching between logins.
Parents and students see it the same way. The Schoolcanvas mobile app already carries announcements, homework, attendance, fees and the bus location. With Assist, the same app shows worksheets, assessments, the revision plan and marks. One app gets opened every day; a second app often doesn't.
Better planning, not just less typing
Saving teachers from retyping marks is the obvious gain. The bigger one is that academic decisions get better data.
- Lesson plans and the exam schedule. The ERP's lesson plan module is class-wise and matched to the exam schedule, while Assist supplies ready lesson plans aligned with NEP and NCF. Together, the academic head sees what has been taught against what will be tested.
- Remedial groups. Assist reports group students into high-performing, average and below-average. Read alongside attendance from the ERP, the remedial list is more accurate.
- Teacher development. The Classroom Observation Tool (COT) is linked to teacher appraisal, so classroom observations, student results and appraisal are part of one picture.
- Substitution periods. Assist worksheets work in substitution periods or when a teacher is absent, so a class with a substitute teacher still has meaningful work for the period, not a free period.
- School-wide view. Management and academic heads see every classroom's activity on one dashboard, down to each student.
Already have an ERP? Or only want the LMS?
Assist can be bought without the ERP, and it works on its own. Some schools start with Assist, the AI LMS for schools, for the classroom and add the ERP later; others run the ERP first. The benefits in this post come from using both, but neither is a precondition for the other.
If you are comparing options, ask any vendor to show you the full path of one mark: from the test, through correction, to the printed report card and the parent's app. It is the quickest way to see how well two systems really talk to each other.

Common questions.
Can we use Assist without the Schoolcanvas ERP?
Yes. Assist is sold separately and works on its own. Using it with the ERP adds shared student records, marks that flow into report cards and one app for admin and academics.
Do Assist marks go straight into the report card?
Yes. Marks from Assist flow into Schoolcanvas report cards. Written answers corrected with AI support are reviewed and validated by the teacher first.
Do parents need a separate app for Assist?
No. When Assist is used with the ERP, worksheets, assessments, the revision plan and marks appear in the same Schoolcanvas app parents already use for homework, fees and the bus.
Is student data used to train AI models?
No. Student data is not used to train public AI models.
